Georgetown, Guyana: A critically ill girl who was injured in a fire in Mahdia has been transported to a hospital in New York. She was being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Guyana. The transfer was made to ensure the best possible care for the patient and to take extra precautions.
The girl, who is thirteen years old, was accompanied by her mother on the medical evacuation flight. Northwell Health, a hospital in New York, has generously waived all medical costs for her treatment.
The medical team from the Georgetown Public Hospital, led by Dr Shilindra Rajkumar, Head of the Burns Unit, assisted in moving the patient from the hospital to the airport.
The Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, and his advisor, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, were present to support the family and see the child off.
The decision to transfer the girl to the Northwell Burns Center at Staten Island University Hospital in New York was based on discussions between the Guyanese medical team and several top hospitals in the United States. The Northwell Burns Center is well-regarded worldwide for its expertise in treating burn victims.
President Mohamed Irfaan Ali of Guyana has expressed his commitment to providing the best possible care for the child and has pledged full government support to the family. The government’s representative at the United Nations, Carolyn Rodrigues, will provide necessary assistance to the mother and child during their stay in New York.
The Ministry of Health and the Georgetown Public Hospital wish the child a complete and speedy recovery. They hope for her safe return to Guyana once she has fully recovered.
