LIAT 2020 marked a new era of Caribbean travel by launching its inaugural flight to Guyana on Tuesday, 19th November, 2024. The historic landing of LIAT 2020 from V.C. Bird International Airport, Antigua and Barbuda to Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Guyana marks a significant milestone for the tourism sector of the nation.
The initiation of the services by LIAT 2020 would play a massive role in strengthening their relations and enhancing regional connectivity. Along with that, it would also open several affordable options for Guyanese travellers, who are looking forward to flying across the Caribbean.
As per the details, several dignitaries were part of the inaugural flight of LIAT 2020 to Guyana which included, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne, the CEO of the airline, Hafsah Abdulsalam, and many others.
As the aircraft touched down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, it was greeted with a water salute, celebrating the new chapter in the aviation history of the Caribbean region.
When the delegates got off the plane, the soldiers and a marching band played the national anthem of both Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda, extending a warm welcome to all the dignitaries.
The first visit of LIAT 2020 in Guyana was welcomed with a grand ceremony. The ceremony was attended by several delegates including, the Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, the CEO of LIAT 20, Hafsah Abdulsalam, the Development Commissioner of Antigua and Barbuda, Daven Joseph, and the Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh.
The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne shed light on the services of LIAT 2020. He said that LIAT 2020 is a much stronger, better capitalized airline compared to its predecessors with nearly 200,000,000 EC dollars invested to ensure its success.
PM Browne said that this investment guarantees the airline’s stability and long-term viability. He further continued to say that they are committed to transport their visitors to Guyana, ensuring that they have a consistent and reliable connectivity.
The Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh also shed light on the services offered by LIAT 2020. He emphasised that how the expansion of air connectivity has significantly contributed to an increase in visitor arrivals, supporting the growth of Guyana’s tourism sector.
He further said that the return of LIAT to Guyana marks a positive step for both local tourism industry and the region’s travel options.
Boost to Tourism Sector of Guyana
With its expanded service, LIAT 2020 will offer 8 flights per week, bringing an additional 796 seats to Guyana’s air traffic. These services are anticipated to play a major role in boosting the growing demand of Guyana for travel among international visitors.
