British adventurer Charlie Bicknell reckons that he has made a fine discovery. On his latest trip, Bicknell says he has located the highest point of Mount Roraima which, he says, is on the Guyana side.
This discovery shakes the notion people have developed over the years that the highest point on the mountain is located in Venezuela.
Mount Roraima another wonder of the nature, sharing geographical borders of Guyana, Venezuela and part of Brazil. Despite several expeditions in the past, the coordinates of its highest point in Guyana had never been identified.
This lack of information was the primary reason which encouraged Bicknell to undertake this task. A GPS watch, a GPS phone, and a barometer in hand, the 31-year-old hiked up Roraima’s face from Guyana. He climbed what he says is higher than the recorded one in Venezuela the peak.
“Guyana is unique,” Bicknell said. Finally atop Roraima, what was captured are shapes and faces cut in the residual rock which has eroded for about 500 million years. “I have never seen anything like this,” he added.
Bicknell attempts to ascend each and every one of the highest peaks of the South American countries. So far, he has been to such hikes for 8 times, and this time to Guyana. Next on his list are Colombia, Suriname, Chile, and Argentina.
The whole aim of an aspiring mountaineer is all about recording the experiences, talents and troubles in the climbing of these magnificent peaks. “It was my fantasy to sum up 12 mountains in South America,” he said. “All such explorers of the region lacked completion of this challenge.”
While advancing Guyanese adventure tourism, Bicknell’s expedition also contributes to the reappearance of the debate regarding the geology and geographic approach to Mount Roraima.
For those who track the scientific study of supernatural beings who dwell on top of these mesas, Bicknell’s pronouncement could radically redefine how one of the most photographed tepuis on the planet is perceived.
