Guyana prison officer charged with ‘Narcotics Trafficking’

A prison officer from New Amsterdam, Guyana was remanded for trafficking narcotics in the prison.
The officer is identified as 32-year-old Angelica Cameron, a resident of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice. She was remanded to prison on Tuesday for the offence of possessing narcotics with the purpose of trafficking it.
The prison officer was taken to the New Amsterdam Magistrate Court and was presented before Magistrate Peter Hugh.
On 9 December at the New Amsterdam prison, Cameron is set to have possessed 137 grams of cannabis meant for trafficking.
Subsequently, Cameron was also charged with possessing 152 grams of said drug at the Pententry Walk in New Amsterdam on the same day.
However, she has not pleaded guilty to either of the charges.
Moreover, during the proceedings of the court, Ryan Crawford, the lawyer, requested that bail be granted to his client.
Notably, the officer has not been dismissed yet from her job. Crawford fought for Cameron and stated that no narcotics were found from Cameron’s person but in the prison’s lunchroom.
While shedding light on the other case, the lawyer stated that the other charge pertains to narcotics that were allegedly found in her car and not on her person.
It is to be noted that Cameron will make her next appearance in court on 27 December 2023.

Another person commented- I don’t really agree with what she did. It was wrong, but I guess she learned from her mistake; we all have minds of our own, and we have the power to choose right from wrong.
Moreover, one more case occurred on 9 December, when 41-year-old Rondel Stephen, a farmer of Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, was charged with the offence of possessing narcotics with the purpose of trafficking 33.9 grams of cannabis.
This incident took place on Saturday, 9 December 2023, at Mainstay Essequibo Coast.
Further, on 12 December, the accused was taken to the Anna Regina Magistrate Court, and he was presented before the worship Miss Esther Sam, where the charges were read to him by the honourable court.
However, he did not plead guilty and was granted bail for a sum of $100,000.The case has been adjourned till 16 January 2024.
