The Ministry of Health and Wellness of St Vincent and the Grenadines has released a report in public interest, considering the likelihood of high temperatures during the ongoing hurricane season. The report refers specifically to this weekend and warns citizens that temperatures will rise to higher levels than normal.

According to a statement issued by the United Nations, the planet has experienced the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the span of the last three months. This unprecedented rise in temperature has been attributed to climate change. As is expected, such unusual weather conditions are likely to have an adverse impact on the health of individuals.

Due to this eventuality, people have been given certain directives to follow which are meant to protect them and their families.

The Ministry of Health has offered the following pieces of advice for the benefit of all citizens:

  1. Stay hydrated – The more we sweat the more water our bodies will need. Drinking water, coconut water and unsweetened beverages before you get thirsty can keep you ahead of the “low energy” feelings caused by dehydration.

  1. Avoid sweetened and sugary drinks – like beers and sodas which can cause dehydration.

  1. Wear light coloured loose-fitting preferably cotton clothing- if your dress code permits. Dark synthetic clothing can absorb heat and make it harder for the body to stay cool.

  1. Keep doors and windows open where possible. This would allow cooling breeze to flow in and hot air to rise out.

  1. Reduce outdoor physical activity – including exercising during the hottest periods of the day. Plan your outdoor activities for the cooler time like early morning and late afternoon hours if possible.

  1. If you must go outside – walk in the shade, use broad-brimmed hats or umbrellas and apply sunscreen with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 50 or more.

While these might seem like basic directives, the fact remains that they are important to follow and can make a massive difference when it comes to protecting oneself or one’s family from the adverse effects of rising temperatures.

Hence, it is imperative that every individual, man, woman or child, follows them to ensure their own health and safety. Especially considering the sudden and often dramatic onset of dehydration or heat strokes, it is important to follow these guidelines and stay ahead of the curve.

If followed adequately, these guidelines are sure to help people stay healthy and functional during these testing times. Understandably, good health is necessary for every individual and must be taken into consideration to maintain ourselves and allow us to pursue our daily life with the enthusiasm and gusto that one should.
