St Vincent: Young athlete stabbed in neck outside school

A young female athlete, student of Central Leeward Secondary School of St Vincent and the Grenadines was stabbed in her neck by a student of another school on Thursday.

The incident is reported to have taken place at the gate of the Central Leeward Secondary School at Peter’s Hope.

The victim has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries. Hospital officials said that her condition is currently critical and is not responsive to any factors.

According to the doctors, the victim is fighting for her life as her windpipe has been severely punctured due to the stabbing.

The identity of the victim has not been disclosed yet by the authorities but as per the details, the student was stabbed by another female student from a different institute, who is currently in police custody.

Both the students are said to be familiar as both are the residents of Barrouallie. Sharing the details on the incident, a student of the CLSS said that he had just arrived at the school gate when he saw a female student from his school push a student from the other school into a gutter.

He further shared that when the student from another school got up from the gutter, she used something to inflict an injury to the CLSS student. 

As per the police reports, the weapon used for the crime has not yet been traced and are going on with the investigation to dive in for further information.

One of the sources unveiled that the suspect was already bullying the victim for several months regarding which the parents of both the students had discussions earlier.

This incident came into light in a mere 6 weeks after the Ministry of Education conducted a discussion to mark School Safety Week. During the discussions, the students from various secondary schools across St Vincent and the Grenadines shared their statements, referring the time spent at school to ‘not safe’.

The mishap brought limelight to serious matters related to physical hazards within the campus as unveiled by the students from Central Leeward Secondary School. They highlighted about several disturbing activities going on at the campus including the poor security, the absence of safety drills, and the entry of students from other schools with weapons.

All the mentioned topics have become serious cause of concern and raise questions regarding the safety of students at the educational institution. Therefore, the citizens across the nation have urged the government to take serious actions with a vision to ensure the safety and security of every student.
