Trinidad’s Akeem Stewart to receive $150,000 for winning silver medal at 2024 Paralympic Games

Akeem Stewart, silver medallist for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris will be awarded $150,000 from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development in order to recognize and celebrate his accomplishment.

Trinidad’s Akeem Stewart to receive $150,000 for winning silver medal at 2024 Paralympic Games

Akeem Stewart, silver medallist for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris will receive an award of $150,000 from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development in order to recognize and celebrate his accomplishment.

This grant is part of the National Incentives and Rewards Framework, a policy that has been designed to honour athletes who achieve medals at the highest levels of international competition across various sports.

It is not the first time that Stewart will be receiving such accolade, initially as well, in 2019, Akeem was honoured $450,000 for winning gold medal in the men’s javelin and a silver in the men’s discus at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

Following that in 2020, he received $181,250 for achieving a gold medal in the discus and a silver medal in the javelin at the 2019 Parapan American Games. And, recently, in 2024, he received $37,500 for his gold medal at the 2023 Para Pan American Games.

While lauding Stewart for his accomplishments, Minister of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe Lewis stated that Akeem has given all the countrymen a reason to celebrate through his determination and commitment.

He added that Stewart’s performance has made Trinidad and Tobago proud and has become a huge source of inspiration for several aspiring athletes. The Minister continued to say that this reward is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the support to the athletes of the island nation.

He added that they are inspired not only by Akeem’s performance but also by those athletes who have won medals in all other disciplines and surpassed their personal bests on the global stage.

Notably, the 32-year-old talented and decorated athlete of Trinidad and Tobago once again has made all his countrymen proud by clinching the silver medal in the Men’s discus throw F64 final at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Thursday, September 5.

He made a throw of 59.66 m to earn his spot on the podium, and that silver medal came on his first attempt at the 2024 Paralympic Games in the Stade de France. This victory was even more crucial for Stewart as he was the only representative from this country and the Caribbean region at the games.

The Ministry of Sports and Community Development called Akeem Stewart an inspiration who is continuing to add to his legacy of excellence that began with his gold and silver victories at Rio 2016.

They noted that Akeem Stewart’s journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment, dedication, strength and determination towards his passion and goals.
