Julien Alfred wins Diamond League final in Brussels, adds another accolade

Becoming the first-ever Olympic medallist of Saint Lucia, Julien Alfred also recently claimed her first-ever Diamond League title in the women’s 100m. The 23-year-old made a lightning cinch on the field to win the Diamond League final at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Friday, September 13, 2024.

She clocked a time of 10.88s to win the race, fending off her training partner, Dina Asher-Smith of Britain in 10.92s. Meanwhile, Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith of Ivory Coast claimed the third position, clocking the time of 11.05s.

The American track and field sprinter, Sha’Carri Richardson, silver medallist in Paris Olympics 2024 eased off well before the line in the knowledge she had been well beaten, eventually finishing eighth in the nine-woman field in 11.23 seconds.

Following her victory in the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J Pierre extended congratulations to the Olympic Champion, Julien Alfred. The Prime Minister called Alfred, a true source of inspiration who is elevating the sports department of Saint Lucia to greater heights.

The Prime Minister stated that he is immensely proud of all the achievements of the Alfred and expressed his excitement on giving a grand welcome to the athlete to celebrate her accomplishments.

Also, the Minister of Tourism of Saint Lucia, Dr Ernest Hilaire extended congratulations to the athlete on winning the diamond league title. “Ciceron is proud! Castries South is proud! Saint Lucia is proud! It’s now time to CELEBRATE!”

Notably, Alfred will make her return to the island nation on 24th September 2024 via the Hewanorra International Airport. The authorities have asked all the citizens of Saint Lucia to gather in large numbers in order to make a welcome reception of the first-ever gold medallist unforgettable, and filled with several beautiful memories.

On 24th September, Alfred’s welcome will be followed by a Motorcade on the East Coast from Airport to Gros Islet. And the next day, she will join the National School Rallies at Soufriere Mini Stadium and the La Ressource Playing Field.

After that, Julien Alfred will visit the Ciceron Combined School for the unveiling of an Iconic Mural and significant announcements. The Government of Saint Lucia named Julien Alfred as a once-in-a-lifetime talent from the Helen of the West Indies.

And, for the same, they have announced 27th September, as a national holiday designated as a “Julien Alfred Day.” On this day, a free four-hour Concert will be held at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
