The Guyana Police officials on Monday detained a man on charges of smuggling marijuana which was concealed in a bowl of soup into the Camp Street penitentiary at Brickdam in Georgetown.
Notably, the suspect has been identified as Pradesh Ballkishun, a resident of Lot 126 Track ‘A’ Coldigen, East Coast Demerara, Guyana.
As per the information, the suspect was visiting the prison at around 11:30 on New Year’s Day to drop off some personal items of Kapil Gangaden, a male prisoner who is currently housed there.
The personal items were checked at the self-support area by the staff members of the prison. While checking the items, the staff members found various things, including the leaves and stems, which were suspected to be ‘marijuana’ and was wrapped in small plastics. Notably, these items were found to be hidden inside the dumpling of the soup.
According to the information, “the suspect is cooperating with the officers and is supposed to be present in court anytime a day. He is expected to be charged for possessing narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.”
Further, another attempt at smuggling has given out clue to the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, to focus that smuggling contraband into the correctional facility is a felony that has some dire outcomes.
He called on both of the prison officers as well as civilians to recognize the threats at which they place themselves, society and inmates by engaging in the trade of contraband within the penitentiary’s walls.
Noting this, the residents of Guyana have also responded to the matter and expressed their sentiments through the comments via Facebook. Where one of the comments read as “this man was living a good life until he decided to spend some quality time in jail with his boyfriend. Lol”.
Another comment was “At the first place, I would like to say or ask what is it so important of weed to human body? The smelling? Oh no, yack, well he learns from his mistakes. Have a nice new year behind the bars”.
