Grenada: Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park gets 31 new installations

Grenada’s famous Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park has successfully installed 31 new sculptures, thanks to the efforts of the Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA). This project was undertaken to expand the ‘coral carnival’, which is the name given to the entire endeavor.

In the process, the Grenada Tourism Authority also managed to fulfill its aim of expanding Grenada’s scope in the sectors of art and conservation.

Sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, headed the project as its Art Director, submerging and installing 31 sculptures at the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park.

The aim behind ‘coral carnival’ is to celebrate the profound heritage and unique traditions of Grenada. The sculptures themselves are modelled after folklore characters and carnival traditions.

In the process of submerging these installations, a one of its kind viewing gallery has been created for visitors. Furthermore, the project combines art with environmental responsibility and conservation, becoming a shining example of how both can be promoted together. The project allows authorities to reinforce Grenada’s commitment to preserving the nation’s oceans and coral reefs.

The CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority, Randall Dolland was excited by the success of the project and stated the following, “We are delighted to announce the addition of these 31 stunning sculptures to the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. This expansion not only enhances the visitor experience but also deepens our connection to the rich cultural tapestry of our nation. It reinforces our dedication to sustainable tourism and marine conservation.”

The Grenada Tourism Authority also managed to install 19 new moorings with in the bounds of the marine protected area. These developments are being seen as a major shift in the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park’s prospects in the future.

The additional moorings were of great importance as a mammoth influx of tourists is expected following the completion of the project. The moorings allow the accommodation of additional vessels. This in turn enhances the safety of the vessels used for the tour and the occupants of those vessels by giving them designated, colour coded spots for anchorage.
