Grenada: Cricketer Afy Fletcher awarded $80,000 and Diplomatic Passport

Grenada: Cricketer Afy Fletcher has been awarded $80,000 and a diplomatic passport by the government for her exceptional contribution to the sports sector.

She was recognized during the Youth Rally and Recognition Ceremony, held on Sunday under the theme, “Empowering, Engage, Inspire: Youth Shaping Grenada’s Future Together.”

While honouring Afy Fletcher, the Government outlined her outstanding contributions to cricket and her dedicated work in the field of sports.

The Youth Rally and the Recognition Ceremony took place at the Radisson Resort on Sunday with a vision to promote youth empowerment. 

The event brought together young people from across the nation to celebrate the achievements of the country in its diverse sectors.

Afy Fletcher: Second highest All-rounder in Women’s T20 Cricket

The 37-year-old leg spinner, Afy Fletcher has etched her name in the history, by becoming the second-highest all-rounder in Women’s T20 Cricket. 

Fletcher was the standout performer throughout the World Cup 2024, completing the tournament as the third-highest wicket-taker. She was also named in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Team for her remarkable performances in the entire tournament.

She also claimed three-wicket hauls against Scotland and England with best figures of 3-21 came in the final group stage match against the latter.

Her outstanding performances throughout the tournament helped her team to secure their spot in the semi-finals of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Fletcher’s performance still remained the talk for the major discussion in the semi-finals as she claimed two important wickets and contributed an unbeaten 17 runs with the bat.

The fast bowler, who is in the West Indies women cricket team has always proved to be a star player for her team in every crucial game of the country. 

She is one of the few leg-spinners in Caribbean women’s cricket who has delivered some of the unforgettable performances for her nation.

Minister of Sports of Grenada Delma Thomas congratulated Afy Fletcher. He said that Afy’s journey from being just a player to becoming one of the consistent bowlers in the world underscores her talent, hard work and determination.

“Our very own Afy Fletcher has been awarded a diplomatic passport for her dedicated work in the field of sports as she flies the Grenada flag,” said Minister Delma Thomas.
