AccuWeather, a private weather forecaster based in the United States, has said that the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season will go beyond the average expected tally, as 20-25 named storms are expected to develop this year.

The Atlantic Season which begins on the 1st of June and comes to a close on the 30th of November, is likely to experience four to seven named storms with the potential to develop into major hurricanes.

Alex DaSilva, the Lead Hurricane Forecaster for AccuWeather has said that the forecast for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season suggests this year will see a larger number of tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes than the historical average and has a direct impact on the United States is highly likely.

The fact that warm water is expected to be present with sea surface temperatures which are above the historical average for the Atlantic basin, means that forecasters are expecting what is being called an explosive Atlantic Hurricane Season in 2024.

The Pacific Ocean has also come up as a factor, which is likely to contribute to developing weather systems in the Atlantic. This is because water near the equator of the eastern Pacific is rapidly converting from El Niño to La Niña, which is likely to have a drastic knock-on effect on the Atlantic in 2024.

According to Alex DaSilva’s assessment, the quicker the transition to La Niña happens, the more active and dangerous the Hurricane season will be. He also said that US Territories such as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, as well as residents along the coast of the US mainland, must have a comprehensive hurricane plan and remain prepared for direct impact in 2024.

AccuWeather has also stated that there is a 10%-15% chance of more than thirty named storms developing this year, which will put the region in a precarious position and might see meteorologists running out of names for these storms.
