The Grenada Athletic Association has announced the National team for the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships. Nine young, talented athletes have been selected and are set to showcase their skills, abilities, and sportsmanship on the track and field.
The World Athletics Under-20 Championships represent a significant developmental opportunity for developing athletes. The Championships will be held in Lima, Peru from 27th August to 31st August 2024, which marks the first time that Peru is hosting a World Athletics Series event.
The athletes that will be representing Grenada in the Championship include, Joshem Sylvester who will compete in two races respectively i.e. 400m and 4*400 meters relay. Along with that Taigon Peterkin and Ethan Sam will also compete in two races i.e. 4*100metres and 4*400metres.
Additionally, Emilio Bishop, Shaquane Toussaint and Samuel Green will represent Grenada in the same race i.e. 4*100 metres relay. And, Devonie Ferguson, Kemron Mathlyn and Qwanell Pierre will compete in 4*400 metres relay.
All these group of athletes will be led by a Team Manager, Desiree Stephens and Head Coach Wayne McSween, representing Grenada on an international platform.
The 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships will gather the most promising junior athletes globally, each competing for a place in history. While extending best wishes to all the athletes, the Government of Grenada stated that it has a proud legacy in this championship.
They emphasised on the outstanding performances by the Grenadians and their achievements. Kirani James clinched gold medal in the 400 metres in both 2008 and 2010, Janelle Redhead won bronze medal in the 200 metres in 2008, and Anderson Peters, earned a bronze medal in the Javelin in 2016. The authorities stated that these past achievements are a source of inspiration for all those athletes who are gearing up to represent the country on an international stage.
They added that this year marks a significant milestone for Grenada, as it will be the largest team the nation has ever sent to the World U20 Championships since its inception in 1986. Moreover, this is the first time that Grenada will participate in the relay events at this prestigious meet.
The team has departed for Lima on Saturday, 24th August 2024 accompanied by Coach Wayne McSween and is currently preparing for their final events.
Moreover, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Grenada has also extended best wishes to the athletes who all have headed to Lima for World Athletics Under-20 Championships 2024. They stated that all the athletes are ready to make their mark and continue Grenada’s tradition of excellence on the international stage.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports wishes Team Grenada all the best as they go out to represent with much Grenadian pride,” noted The Ministry.
