Georgetown, Guyana: Zacharie Scott, a 22-year-old, was arrested for allegedly smuggling cocaine in bags of jumbo shrimp while travelling to New York from an American Airlines flight from Guyana on Friday.
It is to be noted that Scott is a US citizen and lives in Guyana for the time being. He was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport while going through customs at JFK, as stated by the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
According to the reports, during the customs screening process, Scott’s suitcases were selected for a secondary screening. When Customs and Borders Protection officers checked the bags, they discovered loose clothing and multiple packages of frozen jumbo shrimp.
As per the complaint, the shrimp was wrapped in sealed plastic inside. When the investigators cut the bags to reveal what was inside, they recovered brick-shaped objects filled with a white, powdery substance.
Notably, a field test of the powder revealed that the packets contained cocaine, which was approximately 40 pounds worth in total, the complaint stated.
The investigating officers took Zacharie into custody and asked several questions related to the matter. The accused allegedly told officers that he had brought the packages into the US in exchange for a payment of $5,000 or $6,000.
Noting this, if Scott is convicted, he could face a maximum of 20 years imprisonment. The investigation of the matter is ongoing. Moreover, a judge ordered the suspect to be detained until his bail hearing on Tuesday.
The news has been shared on various social media platforms, and many people took to their official Facebook handles to express their concerns and frustration regarding the matter.
While reacting to the news, a person named Glass Persaud wrote, “Man, these people making it worse for others yall go work for an honest living.”
Another FB user by the name of Tameshchand Ragnauth commented, “Watch these low-life money hungry people making it worse for our people traveling.”
