WIPO aims to bring economic prosperity to St Kitts and Nevis

Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The Government of St Kitts and Nevis is honoured to host the World Intellectual Property Organization-WIPO chaired by Attorney General Garth Wilkin.

The event was held on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Part Hyatt- St Kitts Christophe Harbour under the theme, “IP: Innovation to Prosperity.”

It is to be noted that the welcoming ceremony was initiated in the morning. The Ministerial meeting for the Caribbean countries was supported by Prime Minister Terrance Drew.

A wide range of topics were discussed during the one-day meeting.

The primary focus of the meeting was to translate Caribbean creativity and innovation into sustainable economic prosperity, as the Caribbean region is highly rich in talent, heritage, culture and innovation.

Notably, every effort is made to professionalize and protect the innovative expressions and production of its people, as these are the foundational blocks on which all industry is built.

PM Drew, along with the Government of St Kitts and Nevis, has extended his gratefulness to WIPO for their time-honoured collaboration and support towards ensuring that creativity and innovation can flourish in the region.

Garth Wilkin-Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs of St Kitts and Nevis, addressed the key stakeholders at the WIPO to underscore the essential role of intellectual property (IP) in the sports industry.

Many Caribbean countries and their specific leaders represented their region in this meeting.

– MS Ricki Camacho, who is serving as a Registrar of the Antigua and Barbuda Intellectual Property and Commerce Office, represented her country at the WIPO.

The discussions were held in order to transform the IP Offices of the Caribbean perspective, among other matters.

– Senator Aubyn Hill marked his presence in the meeting. He led the discussion on the role of IP as an instrument for social and economic development and also in increasing exports.

He further stated that the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) emphasizes on getting Geographical indicators for Jamaican castor oil, honey, pimento and ginger as they are for Jamaican Jerk and Jamaican Rum.
