St Vincent and the Grenadines: 26-yr-old Owia resident granted bail, accused of trafficking cannabis

St Vincent and the Grenadines: A 26-year-old unemployed resident of Owia was granted bail in the sum of $5000 for the offence of possessing and trafficking 33 pounds of cannabis. 

The accused has been identified as 26-year-old Kenroy Williams who was arrested by the officials while performing their duty at the Grenadines Wharf on Sunday, 17th March 2024. 

According to the details shared by the authorities, the accused was stopped by the police, who later conducted a search on him. While searching, the authorities discovered that the accused tried to smuggle 33 pounds of cannabis to one of the islands in the Grenadines. 

Therefore, he was charged with the offences of Possession of a Controlled drug with intent to supply it to another and for the possession of a controlled drug for the purpose of drug trafficking. 

Subsequently, Kenroy Williams was taken to the Kingstown Magistrate Court on Monday; 18th March 2024 where he pleaded guilty to both his offences. The Magistrate later gave him bail in the sum of $5000. 

The bail was granted to him under the fulfilment of certain conditions. The conditions include that the accused had to report to the Owia Police Station every Monday between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. Along with that, the travel documents of Kenroy Williams were taken by the officials, and his entry and exit at ports were prohibited as part of his bail conditions. 

Notably, the matter has been adjourned and the next hearing will be conducted on 17th May 2024 at the Serious Offences Court. 

Several residents of the community took to their official social media accounts expressed their views on the news and appreciated the authorities for their continuous efforts in combatting the usage and consumption of drugs in the nation. 

One person commented, “Applauds to the authorities for their great efforts, nowadays, drug usage has become very common which is not good.”

Another person commented the following “Good work by the officers, the consumption of drugs should strictly be prohibited.”

The community’s residents have also requested the country’s administration to take stringent measures to make the island nation a drug-free country.
