St Lucia to convene Youth Parliament on May 11, 12

St Lucia: The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports has announced that the Youth Parliament would be convened in the country on May 11 and May 12, 2022. The activity will mark the conclusion of the National Youth Month, which was celebrated in the month of April.

The ministry announced, “The convening of the Youth Parliament in St Lucia, set for May 11th and 12th, 2022. The two-day activity opens as National Youth Month, observed in April, ends.”

This year, the debate will focus attention on the 2018 Child Justice Act. The act, mentioned above, establishes the judicial procedure for the treatment of children and youth within the court and penal system accused of committing offences.

It also focuses on protecting children’s rights and provides for other related matters.

The law is founded on the OECS Model Child Justice Legislation, an OECS Family Law Reform Project initiative.

The young Parliamentarians from around St Lucia were selected following application and interview through the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports – St Lucia. The Youth Parliament event was preceded by training sessions conducted by the current Speaker of the House, Claudius J Francis.

Youth Parliament affords young people an opportunity to make recommendations to the Government regarding the development of the country.
