Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines: Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis – Dr Terrance Drew, paid a brief visit to St Vincent and the Grenadines on August 25, 2023 (Friday).
As per the reports, he was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Ms Naeemah Hazelle.
A major reason for his visit was to gain valuable insights into St Vincent and the Grenadines’ cannabis industry, the update by NBC Radio St Vincent and the Grenadines noted.
During his visit, Dr Drew spoke with Acting Prime Minister – Montgomery Daniel and the country’s Minister of Agriculture – Saboto Ceasar. Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has been out of state since Wednesday (August 23) as he is visiting the Organisation of American States – OAS officials in Washington DC, USA.
A key highlight of Dr Drew’s visit was a tour of the facilities of this country’s Medical Cannabis Authority.
The St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister’s brief visit and tour of the facilities of this country’s Medical Cannabis Authority comes after officials from the Twin Island Federation visited here to explore this country’s medical cannabis facilities.
St Kitts and Nevis is trying to establish a medicinal cannabis industry, reportedly.
According to CARICOM, the Dr Terrance Drew-led Government of St Kitts and Nevis announced in October 2022 that his administration intended to take the necessary actions to create a sustainable medicinal cannabis industry.
On December 11, 2018, history was created in St Vincent and the Grenadines when two bills were passed in this country’s Parliament to create legal footing for the establishment of a formal medicinal cannabis industry.
The two bills passed were the Medicinal Cannabis Industry Bill 2018 and The Cannabis Cultivation (Amnesty) Bill 2018.
St Vincent and the Grenadines Minister of Agriculture- Saboto Caesar welcomed Dr Drew and the visiting cannabis company in St Vincent and the Grenadines and pledged to support any other OECS country wishing to establish a medicinal cannabis industry.
Dr Drew also witnessed a signing ceremony where the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan signed an agreement with the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines for the provision of XCD $11 million dollars to expand some of the country’s key processing plants and also to help the SVG expand its livestock.
The updates suggested that the signing ceremony took place at New Grounds.
