Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: The government of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis has announced that it will be taking another step to revolutionise the housing industry of the nation.
The government has informed the general public that the National Housing Corporation (NHC) will roll out one of the largest housing initiatives of its kind in the history of the twin-island Federation, a blueprint for first-time homeowners.
The SMART Home Initiative, which is expected to be affordable, is considered one of the desirous socio-economic reforms to take place in the Federation. The project will be carried out by the government of St Kitts and Nevis in collaboration with the National Housing Corporation.
While initiating the reform, the government anticipated that the citizens would be enriched through house ownership and would surely contribute towards upward mobility.
The government further briefed the reform will be completed in phases, and the first phase will be commenced in a few months. In the first phase, around 600 homes will be constructed by the end of 2023, resulting in the construction of 2400 homes in 5 years.
The associated authorities have informed that the work for the project has commenced, and the process of reviewing applications and the reconfiguration of one, two and three-bedroom architectural designs has begun. It is informed that the SMART Homes will be equipped with modern technologies such as solar energy, water cisterns and water storage tanks – which has never been done before in the NHC affordable homes.
The government has mentioned that the new housing plan will focus on restoring the confidence in the minds of working-class citizens who may have lost hope of owning a home. If the government is to raise the standard of living, it’s imperative that the government do so from an economic standpoint.
The SMART Affordable Housing Initiative will be used as a tool to mitigate the existing as well as anticipated inflated prices due to limited supply.
