Montserrat: Royal Montserrat Police Service has recently shared an update regarding a rescue operation at sea. The police service started the operation after two persons drifted out to sea while being engaged in recreational line fishing in the area of Isles Bay Beach.
As per the update by the Police Force, on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 12:55 pm, Officers from the Marine Unit were called to action when two persons who were engaging in recreational line fishing in the area of Isles Bay Beach started to drift out to sea.
Additionally, it informed that apart from drifting off to sea, the two brothers were further challenged by the strong wind, which made it difficult for the brothers to ore back to shore.
Further, the Royal Montserrat Police Force’s spokesperson informed the general public that the team from the Marine Unit led by Captain Huggins successfully rescued the brothers, who were met over two nautical miles from the beach.
While expressing gratitude towards the personnel engaged in the operation, it stated, “Special thanks to Engineer Williams and Deckhand Richards for their contribution to a safe rescue.”
Furthermore, it mentioned that on completion of the rescue, Captain Jailall conducted a check on the vessel which the brothers used and found there to be no engine and no radio on the vessel. He was, however, pleased that both men had in their possession life jackets. He further commented that the Marine Unit would continue to encourage the local fishers to be safe while exercising their trade.
While concluding the post, the police service shared some precautionary measures to safeguard other residents and citizens. It was quoted saying, “Therefore before going out, here are a few safety precautions – ensure your permit is valid, you have a life jacket, an extra supply of fuel, radio, cellular phone, and sufficient ice for your catch, and you inform someone on land where you are going and how long you are likely to be.”
