Castries, Saint Lucia: HelpAWS, the animal welfare organisation of Castries, Saint Lucia, shared the good and bad news with the family.

On one sunny day a few weeks ago, someone drove their car onto a beach in front of a local hotel, tossed two tiny puppies out the window, then rolled up the window and sped away. The Managing Director of the hotel told the volunteers of the organisation this tends to happen frequently because word has gotten out they will take care of the puppies.

“This may sound cruel and don’t get us wrong, we don’t condone this behaviour either, but at least these puppies weren’t dumped in the middle of nowhere as most are and left to try to survive on their own. Or worse, poisoned or some other inhumane way to dispose of them!” the organisation noted, while sharing the good news.

While introducing the babies, HelpAWS outlined, “The pups, a boy and a girl who are just over nine weeks old, have been well taken care of these past few weeks, even having gone to the vet to receive their first round of vaccines. They come to us in far better condition than 99.9% of the animals we receive at the shelter, and we are exceedingly grateful for the kindness of the hotel staff in caring for them!”

While sharing the bad news, the organisation stated that the organisation has taken in 14 puppies in just three days, some with injuries or medical issues that will require extensive vet care and costs. In January, donation and adoption fees were thousands of dollars less than HelpAWS’ actual operating costs, pushing the volunteers into a deficit of over $6,000 heading into February. “We always operate on a lean budget, but when we end up upside down, it is pretty scary. How do we continue to rescue these babies if we don’t have the funds to cover the basic cost of caring for them, let alone speciality bills for those who are injured?” the organisation mentioned.

It added, “We know that money is tight for everyone right now, and we appreciate every single dollar that comes in through donations. We are blessed to have a core group of followers who have set up regular recurring donations through PayPal – at least this is income we can count on when projecting what we are capable of doing for these animals each month.”

While assisting the family in donating and helping them in providing a better future, the organisation stated, “We have more than 40,000 followers on Instagram and Facebook – can you imagine the good we could do if every one of you donated JUST ONE DOLLAR?
