Matura man granted bail, accused for possessing firearm & ammunition

A man from Matura was granted $400,000 bail with a surety by a Master of the High Court on Wednesday. He was arrested for allegedly possessing a firearm and ammunition.

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: A man from Matura was granted $400,000 bail with a surety by a Master of the High Court on Wednesday. He was arrested for allegedly possessing a firearm and ammunition.

As per police reports, the suspect was identified as 28-year-old Chervon Hernandez. He resided at the High School Road in Matura. The accused was arrested on March 31 and charged on Monday by PC Caraballo.

The officers from the Matura Police Station (MPS) said that they received an anonymous call from a person regarding a dispute at a resort in its district at around 1:20 am on March 31. They responded to the matter and reached the location.

Upon arrival, MPS officials conducted search for a resort manager around the area and while conversing with the people near the resort, they noticed a man who was clutching his pants pocket area.

He looked suspicious to them and was approached by the police. The investigating officers carried out a search on Hernandez. They found a nine-millimetre pistol and 11 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

He was immediately taken to the custody and charged for the offence by PC Caraballo of MPS. He appeared at a court before Master Margaret Sookraj- Goswami, and pleaded not guilty.

Notably, the court granted him a bail for $400,000 and he was asked to report to his local police station twice a week. Moreover, the case was transferred to the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court, which will hold hearing on April 23, 2024.

Further inquiries into the matter are ongoing, and the authorities have ensured to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
