Jammu and Kashmir, India: Lithium reserves discovered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi will be put up for auction beginning in December, according to Vivek Bharadwaj, Mines Secretary.
The ministry has written to the Jammu & Kashmir government in regards to the transaction advisor for the lithium auction, according to the secretary, who was speaking at an industry event on Tuesday. “We have finished the stakeholder consultation process for the offshore mining act modification. Hopefully, we will soon put it up for consideration in the parliament,” Bharadwaj added.
“It was a stroke of luck for us to find 5.9 million tonnes of lithium. Actually, we were hunting for limestones, which are found in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium, bauxite, and limestone were all discovered together. Exploration for these minerals has garnered increased attention,” he claimed.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the national government announced in February of this year that 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves had been discovered for the first time in the nation.
Lithium, a non-ferrous metal, is among the essential elements of EV batteries and other products.
In Reasi district’s Salal-Haimna areas, Jammu & Kashmir, the Geological Survey of India (GSI), an office of the Mines Ministry, conducted a G3 stage mineral exploration project and estimated an inferred resource (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium ore. The study has been provided to the government of the Union Territory of J&K, according to an earlier statement from the Ministry of Mines.
To find lithium deposits, the Geological Survey of India has suggested expanding exploration efforts in J&K.
