Hayley Matthews completes 100 T20I wickets in World Cup 2024

The West Indies skipper, Hayley Matthews reached the significant milestone of completing 100 T20Is wickets in T20 international career. She reached that landmark in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match against Scotland, dismissing their opening batter, Saskia Horley.

Hayley Matthews had figures of 4-0-24-1 in the game against Scotland, completing her 100th wickets at an economy rate of 5.25. This exceptional performance by Matthews made her the second West Indies woman to achieve that feat of taking 100 wickets.

As, Anisa Mohammed was the first Windies women cricketer to take 100 wickets in ODIs, and the first for the West Indies to take a hat-trick in a Women’s Twenty20 International match. She has recently in 2024 announced her retirement from international cricket.

Hayley Matthews became the second west indies woman to achieve this notable figure, leaving an impact in the history of cricket of the Caribbean region. Matthews is today considered as one of the greatest cricketers, who has also become a huge source of inspiration for several women who aspires to play for their country and represent it on an international platform.

This is not the first time, that she has registered such record to her name. Initially, in the last year as well, she was honoured as the ICC Women’s T20 Cricketer of 2023 for her outstanding contributions with both bat and ball, becoming the second woman from her country to receive that honour.

Matthews is a great combination who has always been prominent with both her batting and bowling skills, contributing for the betterment of the team, leading them towards victory.

Moreover, Matthews is currently representing West Indies as a skipper in the T20 World Cup 2024 in Dubai. She has expressed her determination to bring the World Cup trophy home and to position the sports sector of the Caribbean region on the global map.

Notably, 10 teams are participating in the competition with five teams being divided into two groups i.e. A and B. The West Indies team are a part of Group B along with South Africa, England, Bangladesh and Scotland.

The West Indies team has till now played 2 games, out of which they have won only one i.e. against Scotland by 6 wickets. Their first game of the tournament was against South Africa, where they faced defeat by 10 wickets. The next matches will be held against Bangladesh and then against England.
