Guyana: Labour Ministry visits various regions, holds various events

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of Guyana had a busy day on April 18, as it was engaged in many regional operations. Recently, the minister took to social media and shared a glimpse of the projects going on in the nation.
As per the update, A Ministry of Labour team was stationed at Wayka’s Supermarket, Barrack Retreat Road, Central Lethem, Region 9, to hold a Sensitization Outreach and Exhibition on April 18, 2023.
It further stated that this is one of many initiatives planned to mark Occupational Safety and Health Month 2023, with the theme “A Safe and Healthy Working Environment is a Fundamental Principle & Right at Work.”
Additionally, it informed that the outreach brought services such as Labour, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA), Board of Industrial Training (BIT), and Co-operative Societies (CO-OP) to people.
In another social media post, the Labour Ministry stated that the Ministry of Labour performed a two-day Sensitization Outreach in mining operations in the Takatu and Puruni Landing Districts in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Further, it claimed that on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14, 2023, several mining operations, restaurants, wholesale and retail establishments, and hotels engaged with a team from the ministry.
Ministry also stated that the team also conducted thorough inspections at these locations to establish the degree of compliance and safety for all workers in operation. They also contact Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and Health Center authorities.
Accordingly, informative booklets were also provided to create awareness about safe working conditions and child labour in the area. Employees and employers praised the ministry’s aggressive commitment to combating child labour and pledged their assistance in the fight.
In addition to this, the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department also conducted a series of workplace inspections in Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).
Roydon Croal, Senior Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Officer, inspected the Regional Democratic Council, Mahdia District Hospital, and Ferose and Sons Enterprise to establish the level of compliance and safety procedures taken to protect employees’ lives.
As per the update, meetings were also held with the Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO), the Hospital Steward, the Matron, and the owner to discuss Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues, including the establishment of Joint Workplace Safety and Health Committees and OSH representatives within the respective workplaces.
