Resilience by England cricket was seen on Day 1 of the second Test match against New Zealand at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. The visitors were able to score 280 in their first innings and at the end of Day 1 New Zealand were in a tough spot at 86/5 in response to England’s total.
Analysis of the innings played by England
Having lost some early wickets, England must thank Zak Crawley (73), Harry Brook (85), and Joe Root (58) for their invaluable innings which saw a recovery from 43/4 to something more competitive.
Higher than the average score allowed England to post a total of 280 runs. New Zealand’s Matt Henry was, as usual, exceptional with the ball in hand picking up five wickets.
New Zealand’s gameplay
New Zealand’s response was shaky. Things were looking below-average even with Kane Williamson scoring 37 runs. This form of response was not really what New Zealand fans were hoping for.
Two key wickets for Brydon Carse, one for Ben Stokes and one for Chris Woakes left New Zealand feeling on the back foot.
