Dominica: Rehabilitation work continues at Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard

After years of significant damage from surges in storms and high tides, the Government of Dominica has again embarked on this crucial project, Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard. The rehabilitation work has been continued with a vision to improve resilience for the smoother and safer travel of the citizens and travellers.

The Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and the Digital Economy has apologized for any inconvenience and has urged the public to be patient and supportive to help them work towards an effective and efficient Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard.

They have also encouraged all drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious in the construction zones. “Please adhere to posted signs and temporary detours.”

The Dame Mary Eugenia Charles Blvd is not just a street in Roseau but a historical landmark and a bustling centre for economic and social activities. It is a living tribute to one of the island’s influential leaders and first female Prime Minister of Dominica.

This street was also named after her with a vision to honour her legacy and contribution to the development of the nation. And, this boulevard street plays a significant role in Roseau’s connectivity, linking to other important streets such as Victoria Street, Cork Street and Hillsborough Street.

Therefore, the rehabilitation of Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard would play a huge role in facilitating efficient transportation to the citizens and travellers, and enhancing the accessibility of various parts of Roseau. This area is truly considered as the main point for several cultural events and the gatherings in Roseau city.

From festivities to parades and other activities, they often held along the boulevard. This street highlights its role as a center for cultural expression and community engagement. It also emphasizes its significance as a hub for commercial and social interaction.

The boulevard is beautifully adorned with several restaurants, bars and shops offering plethora of experiences to all the visitors. This area sustained several damages after the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and since then, the authorities have been making efforts in order to restore and rejuvenate Roseau.

While shedding light on the rehabilitation of Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard, the authorities aim to symbolise progress and resilience, reflecting the legacy of the first female Prime Minister and the dynamic spirit of the island nation.

This work will be undertaken in three sections.

  • Section One: From Old Street to Cork Street
  • Section Two: From Cork Street to Hillsborough Street
  • Section Three: From Hillsborough Street to the end of DEXIA Building located on Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard.
