Abolition of ‘Woman Constable’ title to ‘Constable’ in JCF, step towards gender inclusivity

Kingston, Jamaica: The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has taken a significant step to eliminate the gender-specific reference within its officers by abolishing titles such as ‘Woman Constable’ to simply ‘Constable.’

The decision was implemented as the JCF completed its 75-year successful journey since the women put on their first police uniform.

The women in the Jamaica Police Force now considering as a Constable across the board, which reflected the commitment of the department to removing gender-centred references in the entire police force. 

Noting this, the JCF has called this move important towards the gender inclusivity as it will bring a comprehensive change in the police department. 

“The move, which is “as symbolic as it is progressive”, is a critical step in its ongoing transformation”, said the officials of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. 

It is a move which will recognise the capability and dedication of the officers regardless their genders. The abolition of such titles acknowledges the unwavering services and sacrifices of the JCF members. 

“The abolition of titles like ‘Women Constable’ in favour of simply ‘Constable’ is more than a terminology update; it is an acknowledgement of the uniform service and sacrifice of JCF members. This policy not only honours the contributions of women in the force but also underlines an environment of inclusivity, where the focus is firmly on the professional, not the personal”, the JCF remarked. 

The department took this decision to state that the effectiveness and efficiency of the ranks will not be measured by their gender. Their capabilities will be recognised by their integrity and competence. 

“It’s a clear message to society at large that roles and responsibilities in security and service are not gendered pursuits but human ones”, the JCF department continues. 

Additionally, the Government of Jamaica ensures that none of the female constables are taken for granted. They will be given equal opportunity and honours as compared to other male officers. 

The Jamaica Constabulary Force is receiving a lot of appreciation for such initiatives from people across the region on social media (Facebook). Some of the comments read as, 

While reacting to the news, a person named Lenny Wilki commented, “I am in support of your decision Dr Blake. Just like the JDF, the ranks remained equal: Corporal, Sergeant, Inspector. All this leading to officer cores. Placed them in Command position equally and above males based on qualifications.”

Another FB user, by the name of Kelvin Chanel wrote, “This is what the new commissioner, has come up with as a representative of safety n security.”
