Dominica celebrated the National Flag Day on Monday, 14th October 2024, where the locals joined the Motorcade around the Roseau city with whistle stops at Schools along the West Coast ending in Dublanc.

This National Flag Day in Dominica is part of the series of activities for the celebration of 46th anniversary of Dominica’s Independence. This commemoration brought all the citizens of the country together to celebrate a symbol of the vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and unstoppable spirit of the island nation, in a word the national flag of the country.

From towering mountains to crystal-clear seas, Dominica’s beauty shined through every wave of their Flag. The citizens of the country came out in large numbers, carrying the national flag of Dominica in their hands raised high, waived it proudly in order to let the world see the strength and beauty of the Nature Isle.

Moreover, the Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development, Melissa Poponne Skerrit, expressed gratitude to God for the land of her birth. “I love my nation and wave my flag proudly, A heartfelt thank you to the late great Alwin Bully.”

She stated that this auspicious day of National Flag Day of Dominica symbolizes unity, resilience and the spirit of their people. She added it is not just a flag but their pride which represents the unwavering strength and the beauty of her island nation.

Dominica’s National Flag

The flag of Dominica was designed by cultural icon, playwright and artist, Dr. Alwin Bully. The flag has a green backgroundrepresenting the forested island, a cross made up of 3 bands representing the trinity and belief in, which includes the colour, white, black andyellow.

Also, the colours of each band represent aspects of the land and the ethnic origins of its people. The yellow colour is for the indigenous Kalinago people, the sunshine, the main agricultural products of citrus and bananas. Meanwhile, the black colour is for the soil and the African heritage.

Moreover, the white colour signifies the rivers, the waterfalls of the island, and the European influence. On the other hand, the red central emblem symbolizes Dominica’s commitment to social justice.

And, the 10-line green stars is the traditional symbol of hope which is bordered in yellow and represent the 10 parishes of the island, each with equal status, thus the equality of all people. While the centrepiece in the Dominica’s Flag is the Cicero parrot, which is considered the National Bullet of Dominica.
