Guyana Police Force partners with US Embassy for advanced training to officers

The Guyana Police Force partnered with the US Embassy to hold a two-day training programme to enhance the skills of police officers attached to Regional Division #10. The training programme was conducted on Monday, August 26, and Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Mackenzie Recreation Hall in Linden.

This training, by experts from the United States Embassy Cross Functional Team, John Tagliavia, and Gabriel Rosas, was jointly put together by the US Embassy and the Guyana Police Force (GPF). It focused on modern policing techniques while strengthening ties between the two nations and affording local law enforcement with the tools required for effective policing.

The initiative was led by Superintendent Guy Nurse, Commander of Regional Division #10, along with Deputy Superintendent A. Anthony Austin, Deputy Commander. Both supervisors appreciated the value of this training to enhance the capabilities in their ranks and building up good sentiments toward the US among GPF personnel.

More than 30 officers attended a range of sessions over the two days to cover different aspects of modern policing. This included Loud Speaker Operations training that is very crucial for crowd control and proper communication during any event involving public gatherings.

Face-to-face engagement was another central area of concentration since the improvement of officers in interpersonal skills, coupled with their ability to interact professionally with the community in general, has been imperative.

Propaganda Analysis was also a big part of the training, where officers had an understanding of how misinformation is analyzed and, in response to that, another essential skill in the current world.

There were also Practical Exercises in which the officers were able to steer the newly learned concepts in a realistic scenario. These were then succeeded by Feedback sessions during which the facilitators gave constructive comments that would enable the officers increment their talents.

Finally at the end of the program all the participants received certificate of the time they committed for the program along with the new skills they gained. The Superintendent Nurse also extended her appreciation to the US embassy for their generous support and added that such training is of significant importance especially when it comes to improving policing in Region #10, noting the tremendous improvement that it will make to the region.

He was keen to stress that the knowledge of the matter as well as the skills acquired would improve professionalism and efficiency for the GPF in field.

This training can be considered as the testament of the partnership between the US Embassy and the GPF in the extension of law enforcement in the country. This move was made to upgrade not only the abilities but the efficiency of the force for more effective management of policing issues in contemporary conditions.
