Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Guyana has recently informed the general public about the commissioning of an outpatient facility in Region Six. It is anticipated that this facility will assist the Ministry in providing better healthcare to the general public of the nation.

“An Outpatient facility valued over $40 million was commissioned at Port Mourant Hospital, Region Six,” the update by the Ministry read.

It further mentioned that the idea was conceptualised for the department and executed with the sole purpose of alleviating waiting time.

Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony noted that the facility forms part of the government’s aim to ensure that Guyanese receive the best possible care in a timely manner.

Meanwhile, Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr Vishalya Sharma highlighted that the department would help the hospital to capture its data better and guide regional policies and resources, as per the update.

Earlier, the Ministry informed that Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, handed two ultrasound machines to New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and Mibicuri Cottage Hospital valued at approximately $7 million.

Among the donation were also seven (7) critical care beds which will be placed at various health facilities across Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne), as per the Ministry.

The Minister said the ultrasounds machines, which were purchased under the Government of Guyana funds, are part of the Ministry’s plans to improve access to medical imaging across the region.

According to Dr Vishayla Sharma, Regional Health Officer, the region has recorded a 30% increase in the number of ultrasounds done within the last two years. In 2021, 10,341 were performed, followed by 14,036 in 2022.
