Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of Guyana has recently shared an update regarding the graduation ceremony of more than 170 residents of Region 9. The glimpse of the ceremony was shared by the ministry through the official social media handle on March 29, 2023 (Wednesday).

According to the post, the ministry stated, “In keeping with the PPP/C manifesto of the administration’s promise to provide equitable opportunities to its citizens across the country, 171 Region Nine residents graduated from various skill training programmes administered by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).”

Further, it informed that the residents from Churikadau, Maruranau, Achawib, Karaudarnau, Tiger Pond, and St Ignatius villages were among those who graduated in Heavy-Duty Equipment Operator, Welding and Fabrication, Commercial Food Preparation, Electrical Installation, Small Engine Repairs, Garment Construction, and Introduction to Photovoltaic Installation Repairs, among others.

The ministry also informed about other graduation ceremonies, which were held on Monday, March 27, 2023, and Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at Lethem Business Incubator Centre and Aishalton Community Centre, respectively.

As per the update, Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, thanked the graduates for recognising the importance of learning a skilled trade to become employable and hoped they would continue on this path of self-development to improve their livelihood. He also pledged the government’s commitment to upskilling its people in order to capitalise on opportunities arising from the country’s expanding industries. The minister also mentioned the increased training opportunities in the region once the Bina Hill Green Development Centre’s rehabilitation work is completed.

He added that it would see the establishment of training centres for Information Technology, Welding and Fabrication, Joinery, Culinary, and Agro-processing.

The ministry further claimed that Acting Chief Executive Officer of BIT, Saskia Eastman-Onwuzirike; Director at BIT, Michael Turner; Senior Technical Officer Leon Greaves; Regional Technical Officers Indira Singh and Charlene Jovence, Mayor of Lethem, John Macedo and Toshao of Aishalton, Michael Thomas were also present at these ceremonies to share in this reward filling moment.
