Georgetown, Guyana: Ministry of Labour of Guyana shared an update regarding the visit of the delegation to the mining town of Madhia. “On March 28, 2023, during a visit to the mining town of Madhia, the Ministry of Labour conducted a sensitization session with the students of Mahdia Secondary School to raise awareness on the issue of child labour and the detrimental emotional and physical effects that children forced into child labour can experience,” the ministry stated while informing.

As per the post, the team of Ministry of Labour representatives was led by the Chief Labour Officer, Dhaneshwar Deonarine and included labour officer Latoya Clarke and legal officer Jinelle Thomas.

The social media post by the ministry of labour noted that the interactive session included detailed explanations of the definition of child labour, the causes of child labour and the detrimental effects it can have on our children and society. The Chief Labour Officer highlighted the importance of building partnerships with the community to prevent and eliminate child labour.

It also mentioned that this session was conducted with the intention of creating awareness of this phenomenon and achieving the community’s support to tackle the issue of child labour.

The ministry also asserted that during this activity, the ministry was able to directly reach approximately two hundred and fifty (250) students and their teachers. Brochures and posters with key child labour messages were distributed.

While concluding the update, the Labour ministry mentioned that the elimination of child labour in all forms is imperative, and the Ministry of Labour is committed to doing what is important to ensure we prevent the scourge of child labour.
