Bahamas: Jonquel Jones, a professional basketball player who hales from the Grand Bahama, is named as the “2021 WNBA Most Valuable Player.”
The Prime Minister of the Bahamas – Philip Davis, congratulated Jones on her this achievement via his Facebook post and cited that, “The best female basketball player in the world is from Freeport, Grand Bahama. Let that sink in! Congratulations to Jonquel Jones for being named the 2021 WNBA Most Valuable Player.”
“We are so proud and will be cheering loudly as you lead the Connecticut Sun in the postseason,” the appreciation post further noted.
What is WNBA –
The Women’s National Basketball Association – Most Valuable Player, is an annual Women’s National Basketball Association – (WNBA) award being given since the league’s inaugural season that is in the year 1997.
Voting process for the “WNBA Most Valuable Player” –
The voting for the most valuable player takes place immediately following the regular season. A panel of sportswriters and broadcasters decides the award recipient throughout the United States. Panel members are asked to select their top 5 choices for the award, with 10 points awarded for a first-place vote, seven for the second, five for the third, three for the fourth and one for the fifth.
About Jonquel Jones –
Born on January 5, 1994, Jones is a professional basketball player for the Connecticut Sun of the Women’s National Basketball Association – (WNBA).
She was drafted with the – 6th overall pick in the – 2016 WNBA Draft. Since May 2019, Jones also holds the citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina nations which enables her to play for their national teams.
In June 2020, Jones announced that she would abandon the WNBA season amid concerns about the rising COVID-19 cases.
