Sada Williams, one of the most celebrated athletes of Barbados received the National Sports Personality Award for 2023 for her excellent contribution and unwavering dedication towards the sport.

Sada Williams, one of the most celebrated athletes of Barbados received the National Sports Personality Award for 2023 for her excellent contribution and unwavering dedication towards the sport. Due to her commitments, she was unable to make it to the award ceremony, which is why Dorian Best accepted her awards on her behalf.

Notably, a glittering ceremony of the annual 39th National Sports Council awards was conducted on Friday, 5 January 2023. The event took place at the Wildey Gymnasium. Along with that, she also obtained the Minister’s Award for 2023.

The decision to choose the winner of the Minister’s Award was given to the Minister of Sports, Charles Griffith. The winner was decided on the basis of their contribution in the realm of sports and culture. Also, the recipient of the award should exemplify the essence of pride in the sport and uphold the honour and dignity of Barbados.

Achievements of Sada Williams

  • She has also been the recipient of bronze medals at the 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Champions held in the USA and Hungary.
  • She is the first Barbadian woman ever to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships in 400 metres.
  • Williams is also the winner of the Gold Medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Moreover, a seven-year-old golf sensation, Ashon O’Kola was awarded the Junior Outstanding Sportsperson Award in the male category and 14-year-old rising chess talent, Hannah Wilson received in the female category.

It is to be noted, Hannah became the youngest player to win the Barbados Chess Federation Ladies National Championship in April 2022. She also became the first player male or female to make a World Top list when she entered the top 100 under 14 female players in July 2023.

Meanwhile, Ashton O’Kola started and ended the year on a winning note. At the beginning of the year, he won the Future Champions National Championship in San Diego, California in the USA. It is also anticipated that he will bring the laurels for the nation in the field of sports in the coming future.
