Roseau, Dominica: Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, recently participated in a press conference where he highlighted to the general public the high-class and modern services offered at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital.

During the press conference, Prime Minister also answered some questions from the general people. One of the questions asked was why some Dominicans still seek medical care abroad. To this, PM Skerrit mentioned that some people aren’t aware of the healthcare services provided in the country.

He further outlined that the original plan of government had not been fully implemented. He was quoted saying, “There’s a policy in place in the Dominica government that people who are within the age of 16-18 would be provided with free medical care until any PM of the country not going to change.”

He also mentioned that the administration has been working days and nights while updating about the latest development. PM Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the government had introduced diagnostic tests in the hospital at Portsmouth constituency of Dominica. He also stated that ICU had been introduced but was not fully embraced locally.

According to the Dominican government, the first phase of the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital was opened by Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit in the year of 2019. PM Skerrit, along with his wife and Parliamentary Representative of Roseau Central – Melissa Skerrit, cut the ribbon and marked the commencement of the hospital.

The government has outlined that it is a new state-of-the-art and has been constructed at the cost of over US $40 million. The event was attended by the President of Dominica – Charles Savarin, and his wife, Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd Knight, Members of the Cabinet, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Dominica Lu Kun, and other Members of Parliament.

PM Skerrit, during the inauguration ceremony, stated that the healthcare service is a part of the national development thrust developed by the ruling DLP administration.
