The Governor and the premier of Turks and Caicos Islands have spoken up against the tragic homicide case at the territory’s Youth Week event.
In a statement issued yesterday, Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam and Premier Washington Misick stated that the senseless killing of Sevano Wilson was a matter of great shame for the nation, which put a blotch on “an inspiring week of events celebrating the talents and achievements of our youth.”
“We are gravely concerned by and strongly condemn the merciless taking of life. Reckless actions can lead to irreversible consequences. We remain committed to ensuring every action is taken towards crime abatement, supported by the necessary resources. We ask that all communities and groups continue to work with the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force to tackle such matters. We must do all that we can to prevent needless tragedy in the future,” the leaders said.
Daniel-Selvaratnam and Misick were quick to extend their condolences to the bereaved family and requested the public to provide assistance to the police with their investigation.
According to reports issued by The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Wilson aged 21, was stabbed during an altercation at a Youth Week event on Governor’s Beach.
He was taken to the Cockburn Town Medical Center where he passed away and was declared dead despite receiving emergency treatment.
This development has left the nation in shock and has raised concerns with regard to public safety. The most outrageous aspect of this is the fact that the crime occurred at an event meant to appreciate and promote youth culture.
This has left the authorities scratching their heads as they have been placed in a precarious position. They are now unsure of how to mitigate the backlash that this murder has brought.
Questions are also being raised about the security apparatus at the event and how such a gruesome killing could occur in such a manner. While citizens and leaders are outraged, the authorities have been left with quite a task at their hands.
