Tropical Storm Fiona to pass 100 miles away from north Dominica

Dominica: The Office of Disaster Management has issued a statement on Tropical Strom “Fiona”, which is expected to pass 100 miles away from the Commonwealth of Dominica. As per the prediction by the management office, Tropical Storm Fiona was located about 500 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands as of Thursday 15, 2022 (Thursday).

While sharing the information, the office mentioned, “A tropical depression in the Central Atlantic was upgraded to Tropical Storm FIONA last night. On Thursday, 15 September 2022, Tropical Storm Fiona was located about 500 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands”.

According to the experts, the storm has been moving towards northern Leeward Island, and there are predictions that it will pass 100 miles away from the north of Dominica late Friday into Saturday.

The effect of Fiona will be minimal on Dominica as per the wind impact and the current track of the tropical storm. Dominica might witness heavy rainfall, ranging from 2 to 4 inches to higher amounts in some of the elevated areas. There are assumptions that the rain may cause flash flooding and landslides islandwide.

Along with the prediction, the department has also shared preventive measures for the general public’s safety. The department warned that the residents must continue to monitor the progress of the tropical storm when it crosses the northern Leeward Islands late Friday into Saturday.

The disaster management office further advised the resident to be aware and ready with a plan ahead for Friday and throughout the weekend. The persons are also asked to avoid crossing waterways and flooded roadways during the event of heavy rainfall.

The department has raised expectations related to landslides in some areas. “Conditions may necessitate the issuance of a flood watch or flood warning,” the disaster management office stated.
