History of Suriname Independence Day
The fertile land and rivers became home to plantation colonies established by Dutch and English settlers. When the disputes arose during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667, a peace treaty ensured the Dutch kept Suriname.
The Creole members of the National Party of Suriname (NPS) started a debate to push for complete Independence.
As a result, on November 25, 1975, Suriname gained its Independence. Henck Arron became the country’s first Prime Minister, who was then leader of the National Party of Suriname, while Johan Ferrier, former governor, became the first President of Suriname.
Notably, the country was formerly known as Dutch Guiana and later Surinam. In January 1978, the official spelling changed from Surinam to Suriname.
Suriname Culture
Suriname culture is a blend of African, European and Asian influences. The country has a diversity of population with people from India, Africa, the Netherlands, Indonesia and China.
Its culture is reflected in sports, literature, art, craft, performance, cuisines and religion. The most famous sports in the country are football, volleyball and basketball.
Over 90% of the country is covered by tropical rain forest. Dutch is the official language in Suriname, but most people speak a Creole language at home; this Creole language is called Sranan Tongo.
