Guyana: 34-year-old charged for offence of raping young girl
A 34-year-old of Guyana unemployed man and a resident of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, Guyana charged with the offence of “Rape of a Child Under 16 Years” contrary to Section 10 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03.

Georgetown, Guyana: A 34-year-old unemployed man and a resident of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, Guyana charged with the offence of “Rape of a Child Under 16 Years” contrary to Section 10 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03.
The accused has been identified as Clifton Graham who was taken to the Sparendaam Maagistrate’s Court and was presented before Magistrate George where the charges were read against him.
As per the details, the accused was arrested on 15th September 2023 and charges were laid on him on Wednesday. Notably, the matter has been adjourned till now and the next hearing will be held on 22nd March 2024.
Additionally, the accused was not required to enter a plea and was subsequently remanded to prison for the offence he committed.
The family of the victim is demanding justice for her daughter and requesting authorities to take stringent measures possible to punish the culprit for the crime he committed. The authorities have also promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
Moreover, this is not the first rape that has occurred in Guyana, the cases of sexual assault have increased significantly over the years. Therefore, the residents of Guyana have requested the administration to take stringent measures in order to control such kinds of offences.
Various residents of the community took to their social media accounts and expressed their views about the news.
One person with a Facebook account Sherry Budhram commented “Wicked big man he should get a life sentence.”
Another person with a Facebook handle Sohan Persaud commented the following “He deserves a life sentence; he should be given harsh punishment for his crime.”
“Nobody should ever do this to anyone, this is so cruel act, shame on this guy who attempted rape on a young girl,” wrote another person.
The Government of Guyana has assured to take strict actions against those involved in rape cases, ensuring the safety and security of every woman in the nation.
