Jamaica got its fastest women sprinter, now popularly known as sprint star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who sets the record of completing the 100m sprint in just 10.63 sec at the Olympic Destiny meeting in Kingston. She is now said to the second-fastest woman in history because the first fastest woman title is still with US sprint star Florence Griffith-Joyner, who sets the world record of 10.49sec.
Indeed, only Griffith Joyner has ever gone quicker in the event now and has three better timings with her world record of 10.49 and runs of 10.61 and 10.62, also achieved in 1988, according to World Athletics.
Carmelita Jeter tweeted, “You have come back from having a child and showed the world how talented and driven you are. You are officially the Fastest Women Alive.”
She also tweeted that it’s one part of the process she can’t get too complacent as she still has to make the national team at the national trials.
As Fraser-Pryce started the run like a bullet fired from the gun and after which she ran so fast to maintain a significant margin on the field while running. She left back Natasha Morrison, who achieved 2nd position with 10.95 sec until the finish line and maintained margin with Kashieka Cameron third on 11.39 sec.
“Honestly, no, I wasn’t coming out here to run that fast,” she said. “Thank God that I finish healthy.”
She said she was capable of relaxing and running as there was no tension just needed to get one added race in before the national trials.
Fraser-Pryce did hint, however, that she can run faster with the Olympics approaching.
If she could run 10.6 now and trials are some time away, this year I just wanted to break the 10.7 barriers so now I can focus on making the team to the Olympics, Fraser-Pryce said.
