The official start to the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is a mere 100 days away and experts in the field, including those from AccuWeather have warned that this could be a supercharged Hurricane season, which has raised concerns.
This prediction is down to two very specific factors, the return of La Nina and warm waters across the Atlantic, which are expected to influence proceedings to a large extent.
The NOAA data compilation on the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season gave a few interesting observations including the fact that the Atlantic basin saw 20 named storms in the previous season. This places the 2023 Hurricane Season in the fourth position in terms of the most named storms in one year, when data from 1950 onwards is taken into account.
Seven of these weather systems matured into hurricanes, while three became intense enough to be categorized as major hurricanes. The 2023 season presented with record-warm Atlantic Sea surface temperatures and a strong El Nino, both of which had a significant impact on how the season progressed till it came to a close.
As the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season is approaching fast, it is important to keep in mind that these weather systems have a major effect on the region and its people.
The National Hurricane Center has been responsible for releasing the names which are used to tag storms in the Atlantic region since 1953. The nomenclature of storms in the Atlantic is regulated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization, which maintains the system and updates it in accordance with the strict procedures that have been put in place.
