Grenada: The government of the Caribbean country has an update about the “voter identification card” on the day of the general elections, organised on June 23, 2022. The government has shared a press release to inform the general public about the only form of identification that shall be presented on the day of the elections.
The press release read, “The Parliamentary Elections Office (PEO) wishes to advise that the ONLY form of the identification that shall be presented on election day is the voter identification card issued by the Parliamentary Elections Office.”
The government has further shared that any elector who holds an expired identification card with an expiry date: January 31, 2022, can present such card when requested to present his or her voter identification card.
A registered voter, who is enabled to produce his/her voter identification card, shall be given a ballot paper once he/she satisfies the Presiding Officer:
a) that he or she has not been issued an identification card; or
b) that he or she has been issued with an identification card which is lost or destroyed.
The PEO has also wished to assure the public that all voter identification cards have been processed and are ready for collection. Registered voters who have not gathered their cards are asked to do so in person before election day to avoid day on polling day.
It concluded and asked the citizens to be guided as per the instructions by the PEO, as it is the only source of information.
It stated, “The public is advised that your official source of election information is the PEO; therefore, you are asked to be guided accordingly.”
The general elections will be held on June 23, 2022 (Wednesday). A total of 41 candidates (including the prime minister) filed nominations to contest the elections. PM Mitchell of the New National Party (NNP) will contest elections from the St George Northwest constituency against Gayton Jonathan La Crette of NDC (National Democratic Congress).
