Loubiere to Bagatelle Road, a gateway of success: PM Roosevelt Skerrit

The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit attended the Groundbreaking ceremony for the Loubiere to Bagatelle Road on Friday, 20th September, 2024. He encouraged the youth, small business owners and farmers of the area to utilize this new road as a gateway of success and turn their business ideas into reality.

This road network saves a portion of the community who are the most productive in agriculture, small business, culture, and sports. Therefore, PM Roosevelt Skerrit asked all the citizens to take control of their financial future as Dominica is moving forward. He stated that he wants every person to be a part of this progress and prosperity.

Notably, the Phase 1 of the Loubiere road will comprise of 10 km of road rehabilitation which includes the construction of 5 bridges, slope stabilization interventions, improved drainage, road widening, and road realignment.

The total cost of this project is 116,000,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars. The project consists of 3 additional sub components, which includes, the development of a road asset management system, a gender responsive road safety awareness strategy, and support for the farming and fishing cooperatives in the project affected communities.

The Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit asserted that this project is about laying the groundwork for continued growth and progress. He added that once the road is completed, it would provide a much safer and more reliable route for residents and visitors alike.

He asserted that it would also reduce the risk of accidents and open up new opportunities for business and enterprise as people move more freely and confidently.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit called roads the “lifelines of the nation”. He stated that they are the foundation stones upon which they are building a stronger Dominica, brick by brick, mile by mile. He added that the construction of the roads will play a huge role in reducing accidents, opening new opportunities, and enhance the safety and comfort to every person who uses it.

Support from the UK

This project has been made possible through a grant from the UK Government. Therefore, the Prime Minister extended gratitude to the government of United Kingdom and stated that it is their funding and belief who made this project possible.

“Your trust in our beautiful island is not misplaced,” noted PM Roosevelt Skerrit.

He further assured the government of the UK that the fruits of this partnership will be felt for generations to come. He added that he also appreciates the support that they have received from the UK in advancing the climate resilience goals through the climate resilience execution agency for Dominica Creed.

PM Roosevelt Skerrit noted that they are thankful for the $36 million that is a grant from the UK government for upgrading 4 major water systems as part of the water system strategic development plan. While shedding light on this project, PM Skerrit noted that it is all set to begin later this year.

Future Projects

Moreover, the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit shed light on the more projects that are taking shape in the coming months. He mentioned about the Cabrits marina, cruise village, the Roseau Road Enhancement Project, the geothermal project and the International Airport.

PM Roosevelt Skerrit called these projects the symbol of development and stated that they are the stepping stones to a future where every Dominican has the tools to succeed. He stated that this future is filled with opportunity, dignity, and hope for every citizen of Dominica.

While emphasising on these projects, PM Skerrit stated that the labour party is working tirelessly to build these roads, schools, and opportunities for people here in Dominica.

“It is a labor of love for Dominica, for her people, for her future. A place of opportunity, dignity, and hope for all,” noted PM Roosevelt Skerrit.
