Jamaica: The Ministry of Education and Youth has moved a step ahead by integrating AI and Adaptive Technology into teaching practices. This initiative is a new start for the country’s education sector.
The announcement of this new step was made public by the Ministry’s Senior Director for Information and Communications Technology, Tyrone Anderson during the AI Web3 Pedagogy Seminar.
This seminar was held at the University of Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) in Kingston on 12th September 2024.
The authorities led this initiative with an aim to improve the current education sector through the integration of more developed and innovative practices. The inclusion of AI Will benefit students with personalized learning.
This will also aid enhanced teaching, improved assessment and guidance, customizability, and better adaptivity. All of these will aid students to interact and improve their tech skills at an early age providing a platform for their holistic development.
Tyrone Anderson however in regard to this said that the authorities are not aiming for a defined education, while also emphasizing not discarding the foundational values that define education.
Adding to his address, he noted these values as, “the warmth of human understanding, the personal touch of a dedicated teacher, and the lifelong mentorship that extends far beyond the four walls of our classroom.”
He also highlighted the great impact AI will have on students especially those with disabilities as he said that AI power tools like speech-to-text and Text-to-speech will act as a groundbreaking initiative for them, opening doors for inclusivity and equity.
Anderson’s speech underscored the ministry’s commitment to maintain its authenticity, while also implementing new technological advancements at the Seminar.
While addressing the innovation that has been planned by the Jamaican authorities, Anderson stated that training sessions have already been started for teachers to equip them with optimized learning practices and offer enhanced learning.
The Seminar was based on the theme, “EdTech Community ReImagined: Innovation in Education,” and discussed the introduction of technology into the education sector for further developments.
The key areas of significant importance were AI and Web3 at the event during which a thorough discussion was conducted. The Web3 is referred to as World Wide Web (WWW) and it is a term used to describe the next generation of the internet.
This technology is rumoured to be built on Blockchain technology, and decentralization, and will be controlled by users.
