Barrackpore and San Francique are not behind the situation, where the water from the rivers has found its way inside the maximum portion of the residential and commercial property, thus leading to heavy loss in terms of property and goods.

The situation is no different in Preau and Moruga; the streets have been overtaken by water from rivers, with residents trapped in their homes. Emergency services are on high alert, day in and night out, just to get people out of trouble to find a safe place in these affected areas.

It is, therefore, very important for people residing in areas that are prone to flooding to take maximum precautions. Here are some safety tips to consider:

  • Stay Out of Flood Waters: Do not attempt to drive through a flooded street or walk across a flooded area. The water could be much deeper than you suspect, and the floodwaters could be covering open ditches or missing manhole covers.
  • Move to Higher Ground: Move to higher ground if your home is prone to flooding. Ensure all family members, especially the young ones and the elderly, are secured.
  • Stay Informed: Keep abreast of the latest weather reports and advisories being issued by local authorities. Heed these warnings and advisories for your own safety.
  • Assemble a Disaster Kit: The disaster kit has to be all set, containing water, nonperishable food, medications, and important documents.

The existing situation of flooding in southern Trinidad is a real reminder of the power of nature and just how prepared societies need to be. The relevant authorities have a very close watch on this situation and are committed to the aid of those affected.
