Guyana’s man charged for smuggling 12.54 kgs of cannabis

Georgetown, Guyana: The resident of Linden pleaded to guilty for the offence of smuggling 12.54 kgs of narcotics. The charge was read against him at the Diamond Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 19th March 2024.

The accused has been identified as Leonard Caleb, a resident of Amelia’s Ward Linden, Guyana. According to reports, the Guyana authorities conducted an operation in November 2023 at Providence, East Bank Demerara. During the operation, Caleb was arrested by the Customs and Anti-Narcotics Unit of Guyana for trafficking cannabis.

As per the details shared by the officers, the accused, Leonard Caleb, was travelling in a motor vehicle when his car, with registration number PAE 6311, was stopped by the authorities in the vicinity of a mall.

When the officers stopped the vehicle, they thoroughly searched it. During the search, the authorities found a salt bag, which contained multiple parcels of cannabis. Subsequently, the officers arrested Leonard Caleb in connection to the cannabis found from him.

Along with that, the narcotics seized from the accused were later weighed by the authorities of the Customs and Anti-Narcotics Unit of Guyana and it equals 12.54 kg which holds a street value of $4 million.

Leonard Caleb was further taken to the Diamond Magistrate Court and was presented before Magistrate Sunil Scarce where he changed his plea to guilty for the offence of trafficking narcotics.

Several community residents took to their social media accounts and expressed their views and opinions on the news.

One person with a Facebook account Sheik Ally commented “A destroyer of young children’s lives, jail time hard labour.”

Another person commented the following “This is so disgusting that the officers found so much of cannabis, it is not a good example for the upcoming generation, people need to stop consuming drugs.”

“The consumption of drugs is not always healthy, people need to stop smuggling it, it might cause adverse effects in future,” wrote another person.

The authorities of Guyana have promised to curb the increasing crime rates in the country. Therefore, they are trying their best to put the culprits behind bars, with a vision of maintaining peace and stability in the nation.
