Guyana’s CANU officers seizes 300 kgs of narcotics, worth $44M

Georgetown, Guyana: The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit of Guyana discovered 300 kgs of Cannabis with a street value of $44 M. All these narcotic items were recovered from the boat on Sunday, 3rd March 2024 in the near surroundings of Fisher Village, Essequibo Coast. 

As per the details, the CANU officers held an exercise in the said area where they found a multi-coloured speedboat. The boat was being operated by two individuals. Upon being approached by the authorities, the two individuals tried to escape on foot. 

This action by the those two raised the doubts of the officers and led them to conduct a search of the boat. While conducting the search, the officers found several bulky, whitish-coloured salt bags. The bags were reported to contain 660 brick-like parcels which were suspected to be cannabis. 

The narcotics found from the speedboat were taken by the officials to the headquarters of the Customs and Anti-narcotics Unit. The cannabis was further tested and determined by the authorities and it was found to be a foreign marijuana which is commonly known as “Creepy.”

Notably, the marijuana was later weighed by the authorities and it weighed 300 kilograms with a street value of GY $44,000,000. 

Several community residents took to their social media accounts and expressed their views on the news. 

One person commented “Good work conducted by the Customs and Anti-Narcotics Unit of Guyana, it is great to see that how diligently, the authorities are performing their duties.”

According to the reports, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit of Guyana has intercepted 859 kgs of foreign marijuana so far in the year 2024. These narcotics have been reported to enter Guyana with the purpose of transhipment. 

The authorities of Guyana have shared their vision to reduce the country’s increasing crime rates. They have promised to continue conducting such exercises to make the nation a crime-free country and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
