Guyana: President of the Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, administered the Oath of Office to five members of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) on December 30, 2022, at the Office of the President on Shiv Chanderpaul Drive. The members sworn in were Maydha Persaud; Doodmattie Singh; Joan Ann David-Monkhouse; Shafiran Bhajan, and Mohammed Saddam Hussain.
The remaining members of the seven-member commission are Avril Crawford and Satti Jaisierisingh. They will take their oaths of office at a later date. The Teaching Service Commission is in charge of appointing and disciplining teachers. During brief remarks, President Ali noted that the functions entrusted to the commission must “not be taken lightly”.
He charged the representatives to be faithful to their oaths and execute their duties professionally. “Your actions will contribute, in no small measures, to ensure that the teaching profession is populated by persons worthy of educating the present and future generations,” he said.
Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Gail Teixeira and the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, were also present at the ceremony.
Dr Irfaan Ali also made impromptu site visits to the Cummings Lodge Housing Development project at Greater Georgetown and other major infrastructural works along the East Bank of Demerara earlier this week.
At Cummings Lodge, he inspected the ongoing housing project and the progress of the connection between the community and North Ruimveldt. The President then visited and inspected the progress of the Eccles to Diamond four-lane highway, which is slated to be finished in the first quarter of 2023.
When finished, the thoroughfare will provide integral links between the East Coast of Demerara, the Capital City and the East Bank of Demerara, which will significantly ease traffic congestion during peak hours.
The Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, other Government officials and technical staff from the Ministry and the Central Housing and Planning Authority were also on the site visits.
