Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of Guyana has recently shared an update regarding the participation of employees in the Joint Workplace Safety Programme.
The Ministry outlined that employees from the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) are now participating in a three-day Joint Workplace Safety Programme offered by the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
They will also benefit from Sensitization Awareness from representatives of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).
The programme, hosted at the GPOC’s conference room, aims to train and prepare members of the Joint Workplace Safety and Health Committee to carry out their mandate in the workplace, as required by Chapter 99:06 of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act, according to the social media update by the Ministry.
It aims to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and maintain safe work systems and practices, thereby minimizing or eliminating workplace accidents.
This includes allowing participants to demonstrate an awareness of their roles and responsibilities as Joint Workplace Safety Committee representatives.
Participants can also conduct workplace inspections and accident investigations, as well as implement techniques to control and/or remove hazards in their own workplaces.
Both participants and employers would receive certification that would be valid for two years.
Neza King, Occupational Safety and Health Officer of the Ministry of Labour, facilitated this session.
Additionally, the Ministry stated that Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, joined Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, and Ministers of Government, members of the diplomatic corps, and other officials at the opening ceremony of National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference 2023 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, earlier in the morning of August 28, 2023.
The NTC Conference provides a forum for Indigenous leaders to meet and interact with the country’s leaders and make critical decisions regarding their livelihoods and development.
The conference will continue until September 1, 2023.
